New Rules for Food Additives

National Food Safety Authority (“NFSA”) issued on September 2020 its Decree No. 4/2020 regarding food additives accepted for use by the food industry (the “Regulations”)

Food entities and manufacturers are prohibited from using any additives other than those listed in the Regulations, and they are given six months grace period to comply with the Regulations.

Food additives should be kept under continuous observation and will be re-evaluated regularly in light of the international standards adopted by the CODEX and EU Legislation.

Food additive is defined to by any substance not normally consumed as a food in itself and not normally used as a characteristic ingredient of food, whether or not it has nutritive value, the intentional addition of which to food for a technological purpose in the manufacture, processing, preparation, treatment, packaging, transport or storage of such food results, or may be reasonably expected to result, in it or its by-products becoming directly or indirectly a component of such foods.

Using additives must be in accordance with the good manufacturing practices (GMP) which will include using the minimum level of additives that is only necessary to achieve the intended purposes.
